Colombia

€100,000 will go towards helping some 27,000 vulnerable children

There are some 550,865 children under the age of 18 of concern to UNHCR in Colombia, many of them in need of protection. The large numbers of internally displaced children are the result of the long-lasting conflict in the country, characterised by the presence of illegal armed groups and organised crime.

€100,000 will be donated to UNHCR projects reaching out to some 27,000 children and youth through projects such as financial support for school-related costs (such as uniforms, transport and books), empowering girls and ensuring that they have equal rights to education, or scholarships for tertiary education.

Ghana

€100,000 will go towards helping over 2,000 vulnerable children

There are some 6,440 children under the age of 18 of concern to UNHCR in Ghana. Many of them were forced to flee conflict in neighbouring Ivory Coast. This has been exacerbated by recurrent natural disasters, in particular floods and drought.

€100,000 will be donated to existing UNHCR projects providing some 2,000 children with much needed financial support for school-related costs (such as uniforms, transport and books). It will help ensure more girls stay within education and provide vocational training opportunities for young disadvantaged children.

India

€100,000 will go towards helping some 10,000 vulnerable children

There are some 189,000 refugees, asylum seekers and displaced persons in India, including some 170,000 Tibetans and Sri Lankans directly supported by the government of India and some 20,000 refugees/asylum seekers, mainly from Afghanistan and Myanmar, assisted by UNHCR in urban areas. Among them, there are some 30,000 children under the age of 18. Since 2009, there has been an increase in the number of asylum-seekers approaching UNHCR. €100,000 will be donated to existing UNHCR projects that assist some 10,000 children by giving them access to education. Projects such as “bridge” classes and Hindi language classes that prepare children for admission into government schools will ensure that children have the chance to share in the joy of learning. Lebara’s grant to UNHCR will also ensure that pre-school children attending childcare centres are provided with necessary services and equipment, including toys and uniforms.

Pakistan

€100,000 will go towards helping over 52,000 vulnerable children

There are some 1,045,378 children under the age of 18 who are of concern to UNHCR in Pakistan. The floods that hit Pakistan in the summer of 2010 were the worst in almost a century, with 1 million people still displaced as a result. Within this context, Pakistan continues to host some 1.7 million refugees, one of the largest populations of its kind in the world. Most are from Afghanistan and live in refugee settlements and urban areas.

€100,000 will help UNHCR increase the number of children attending school and, perhaps more importantly, will ensure that they can work to keep children in school once they are enrolled. Education, including literacy and vocational training, serves as an important tool to protect them from sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), crime and drugs. It adds to a sense of normality in everyday life and provides them with skills and knowledge for the future.

Philippines

€100,000 will go towards helping some 15,000 vulnerable children

There are some 37,771 children under the age of 18 who are of concern to UNHCR in the Philippines, following the typhoons in the Philippines towards the end of 2009, and conflict in Mindanao in early 2010.

€100,000 will help UNHCR provide community based activities that lead to better protection for children. The money will also enable UNHCR to provide language training, vocational skills and early childhood education. These projects will ensure that children are given the tools that they need to end the cycle of poverty and contribute to their society.

Turkey

€100,000 will go towards helping over 2,000 vulnerable children

There are 6,098 children under the age of 18 of concern to UNHCR in Turkey as of 30 June 2011. By virtue of its position on the crossroads between Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Africa, Turkey receives significant numbers of refugees each year. The largest numbers originate from Afghanistan, Iraq, the Islamic Republic of Iran and Somalia. The magnitude and complexity of asylum applications place a considerable responsibility on UNHCR, which continues to make every effort to reduce the waiting period between applications and decisions.

€100,000 will help UNHCR help families to ensure their children attend school and, perhaps more importantly, will ensure that they can work to keep children in school once they are enrolled. This grant will also ensure that UNHCR provides support to children to benefit from educational assistance, as well as from vocational training activities. It adds to a sense of normality in everyday life and provides them with skills and knowledge for the future.
