Lebara embarks on evolution beyond telecommunications
London, Monday 23rd February 2015 – Lebara, the universal brand for the world’s migrant community, is entering a new phase, which will help people unite across borders, generations and cultures. The business is expanding geographically, moving into new sectors and rapidly scaling through its digital activity, with the goal of touching the lives of one billion people by 2020. To support this evolution, several senior executives – recruited for their extensive international experience in communications and entertainment – have joined the Lebara senior leadership team.
Lebara, an established and trusted MVNO, with 250,000 distribution outlets and five million active customers in eight countries, remains focused on serving the needs of migrants, a complex and under-served worldwide community.
Yoganathan Ratheesan, Chairman & CEO Lebara Group, said: “We believe that what brings us together is more powerful than what separates us. By removing barriers to entry and reducing complexity, we want to build on our reputation as a provider of inclusive and accessible products and services, addressing the everyday lifestyle challenges of migrants, wherever they may be.”
The first stage in Lebara’s development is already underway with the launch of Lebara Talk – a calling and messaging app, with the unique attribute of convenient cash top-up in stores, combined with the flexibility of in-app or online top-up – introducing the Lebara brand to new markets across the globe. Several new digital services will be rolled out over the next 12 months, bridging from Lebara’s traditional expertise in communications, to embrace media and financial services.

“We’ve invested heavily in talent and technology to drive the next stage of Lebara’s growth. With the new additions to an already experienced team, I am confident that we have a well-balanced mix of executive talent to deliver on our plans,” added Mr Ratheesan.
Lebara Group has also established a board of directors, and the first non-executive appointment is Gaby Abdelnour, a former Chairman and CEO of JP Morgan Asia Pacific. Additionally, Evert Jaap Lugt, former founder and CEO of Nimbuzz, has been appointed advisor to the board and management team.
Lebara continues to strategically increase the footprint of its existing communications business, by assessing new growth opportunities, as illustrated by 2014’s launch of Lebara KSA in Saudi Arabia. Reflecting this continued expansion, the number of local retail stores offering Lebara products is set to double to 500,000 throughout Europe, Asia and North America.
This strategic expansion, together with significant investment in expertise and infrastructure, and supported by a pipeline of innovative products and services aimed at making migrants’ lives easier, are all driving Lebara’s digital evolution beyond telecommunications.
