Lebara takes immediate action to help provide on-going support to the victims of Typhoon Haiyan
London, UK, Thursday 14th November 2013.
Lebara has offered its direct support and aid to the victims left devastated by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines by donating €100,000 to the UNHCR, the world’s leading organisation working to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees.
The urgent donation will contribute to the UNHCR’s immediate response to provide essential supplies of safe drinking water and food to children and families in affected areas where homes and necessary facilities have been destroyed.
Recognising that it is also an uncertain time for many of its customers, Lebara will match all call credit sent from its customers to their loved ones in the Philippines. This will enable Lebara to continue its support beyond its initial donation and allow customers to help their friends and family by sending call credit to maintain contact. The call credit can be shared by texting ‘SHARE’ to 65088*. Customers will be notified of the service via SMS.
Customers will also have the opportunity to apply to be a trained volunteer in a sponsored visit to the affected areas in the coming months.
Yoganathan Ratheesan, Chairman of Lebara Group, commented, “It is crucially important that we do all we can, as quickly as we can, to help victims. We hope our donation will help to limit further damage as we work on longer term initiatives, with our customers, to help safely re-build the community and protect vulnerable children and their families.”
The devastating impact will continue for years to come and Lebara aims to provide on-going support to the displaced children in the Philippines where a large number of its customers have friends and family. This will be done via its Foundation by providing clean water, food, shelter and access to education.
* In the UK. Customers in France, Netherlands, Spain, Australia and Denmark will be notified of the service and number to text by SMS.
