Phoning Home for Christmas

“Moaning home for Christmas!”
Only 25% of people living in the UK send loving texts at Christmas and only 20% of men remember to phone their parents on Christmas day
 1 in 5 men call their parents at Christmas compared to 1 in 3 women
 West Midlands is the most affectionate UK region and talk the most to their loved
ones at Christmas
 London is the worst region at calling siblings during the festive period and the most
likely to send seasonal greetings by text
London, UK, 5 December 2012 – Only one quarter of people living in the UK send affectionate texts during the Christmas period, according to a survey of 2,000 people by OnePoll for Lebara Mobile, one of Europe’s leading telecoms operators for foreign nationals living in the UK.
Just 20% of men pick up the phone to their parents at Christmas compared to more than 30% of women. Men were found to be 50% less likely to make contact with their siblings than their female counterparts. When it comes to the actual conversations UK residents are having at Christmas, it’s clear that women are twice as materialistic as men (talking more about presents) as well as being twice as likely to talk about Christmas party gossip.
As well as gender divides, the research also revealed clear regional differences within the UK, with people in the West Midlands coming out on top as most likely to call their parents. The West Midlands is also the most loving region, with people living in this part of the country choosing to pick up the phone to speak to loved ones rather than opting for text or facebook to communicate at Christmas.
Of note, some 92% of all calls made at Christmas by people living in the UK are made to other UK residents indicating that people are not picking up the phone to their loved ones abroad and taking advantage of low cost national and international calls made available by mobile operators such as Lebara Mobile. Despite the increasing dominance of social media, phone calls and texts still come out on top as people’s preferred communications means, combining 78% in total.
Busy Londoners text more than any other region in the UK but are actually more inclined to pick up the phone and speak to friends and relatives on the day itself. Significantly, London
is the most foodie region, with people from the capital discussing Christmas dinner more than anywhere else in the UK (54%), compared to 45% in the North West.
With regards to what people across the UK are actually chatting to friends and family about the most, presents came first in the ranking (1) followed by family (2) and Christmas dinner (3).
“The festive period is a time when everyone wants to catch up with family and friends, whether in person or by phone. Our customers have varied and changing needs and we’ve seen increasing demand for national as well as international calls particularly from customers who have been settled here for some time,” said Richard Robertson, Managing Director, Lebara Mobile UK. “Our Unlimited proposition offers one fixed rate each month for all calling, texting and mobile internet needs both nationally and internationally. This gives the added convenience of using just one phone and one SIM, so it’s easier and cheaper than ever before for people in the UK to stay in touch with their loved ones wherever they are in the world this Christmas”.
Providing foreign nationals with high-quality, low cost international and national calling, data and related services, Lebara is celebrating the recent launch of its Unlimited proposition, by launching a 12 Calls of Christmas Campaign around its One Poll research. From 5 December to 16 December, by tweeting #LebaraUnlimited or posting Facebook status updates, users will be entered into a free prize draw to win the chance to be united with a loved one this Christmas from anywhere in the world*.
