Mohammed was born in 1995 in a refugee camp for Sri Lankans in Tamil Nadu State, India. His mother died in childbirth and his father abandoned him shortly afterwards. Mohammed was raised by his grandmother and aunt, and his uncle’s wages paid for his education.
At school Mohammed was a model student, a fine athlete and an active member of the school community – but when his aunt married and had children of her own his uncle could no longer afford to send him to school.
A distraught Mohammed was on the verge of dropping out when Lebara Foundation India intervened, providing a scholarship worth 1000 rupees (€15) to pay his school fees. The Foundation also provided nutrition packs for his young cousins, further easing the money worries of Mohammed's aunt and uncle.
